Weight-Loss Tips

Realistic weight-loss goals are the key to transitioning to a healthier lifestyle.

You will undermine your effort by setting unrealistic goals.  For instance, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds a week or reach your high-school weight, your goals may be impossible and you are likely to abandon hope and stop trying.

Tips for planning reasonable weight-loss:

1.  Set a realistic goals: short-term and long-term.  Permanent weight-loss is slow and steady.  Aim for one or two pounds per week.  Losing weight more rapidly than this means losing water weight or muscle tissue...a temporary, short-sighted solution...all while keeping your end number in mind.

2.  Focus on lifestyle changes.  It may help to make your goals lifestyle-related, rather than number related.  For instance, rather than losing 45 total pounds, focus on adding exercise and healthier eating habits (or breaking unhealthy habits) the focus.

Make your goals specific and measureable.  For example: walk 30 minutes per day, five days per week, while eliminating unhealthy foods one at a time (french fries, donuts, red meat, etc.).

3.  Write down your intake and progress.  Some people may find it helpful to write down all food eaten.  Some may also like to plan what they will eat during the day, so you are less prone to impulse.  Have a strategy for difficult eating situations, such as at a restaurant with friends or a buffet.

4.  Expect set-backs.  Don't "go off the wagon" when you disappoint yourself.  Lifestyle changes take time, so be persistent and get yourself back on track.  Brainstorm strategies for overcoming tempting situations the next time!

5. Evaluate your goals each week.  Think about what works and doesn't as you lose weight.  Make fresh plans to reach your goals each week.  Start with fresh resolve.

6.  Make it a family affair.  Eating healthier will benefit everyone in your family and help you reach your goals.  By eliminating tempting & unhealthy foods from your home, you will have a better chance of success.  Get your household on board with your goals for lifestyle change!
