Scott A. Haughawout, DO is a board certified physiatrist, and is available to evaluate the patient's needs and offer rehabilitation services or injection treatments, as necessary.

Physiatry or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease primarily using physical means.

Physiatrists specialize in a wide variety of conservative treatments for the musculoskeletal system (the muscles and bones) such as back/neck pain, muscle and/or ligament injuries, fibromyalgia or debilitating arthritis, or automobile, work or sports-related injuries.

Physiatrists must complete four years of medical school as well as four years of residency training.

The goal is restoring strength, range of motion, and physical self-sufficiency without surgical intervention, where possible.

A physiatrist takes a thorough medical history of the patient and performs a complete physical exam. Further diagnostic testing may include laboratory tests, x-rays, MRI or CT scans, electromyography (EMG) or nerve conduction studies (NCV) as well as psychological testing.

Treatments for pain or injury may include medications, active physical therapy (excercises), passive physical therapy (modalities), occupational and recreational therapy, massage therapy, aquatic therapy, assistive devices (braces, canes, walkers) and health psychology.

Physiatrists perform injection techniques such as epidural or facet joint injections. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies and procedures may also be performed to diagnose injury or disease of nerves and muscles.

Physiatrists may also test for return-to-work and work restrictions.
